The Oxford Post is written for the city people live in: Cowley and Headington, Jericho and Summertown, Marston, Iffley, Rose Hill, Blackbird Leys, Botley Road and East Oxford, as well as the centre and the two rivers. Oxford is a small city with an extremely tight housing market, a car plant at Cowley, two universities and a permanent argument about how traffic moves through it.

Two councils share the work. Oxford City Council handles planning, bins, licensing and housing; Oxfordshire County Council runs the roads, the schools and the traffic schemes, which is worth knowing before you complain to the wrong one. We name the responsible authority in every story and link to its own record.

The basics

  • Oxford house prices: the typical sale was £450,000 last year, but ward medians run from £315,000 in Northfield Brook to £825,000 in Walton Manor.
  • Roadworks and travel: Botley Road reopens on 20 September and the traffic filters replace the congestion charge on 28 September.
  • Trains to London: 51 minutes to Paddington at best, £6,692 for an annual season.
  • Things to do in Oxford: four of the big museums are free, and two of the ticketed ones are cheaper until 1 September.
  • Planning news: the Local Plan 2045 went to the Secretary of State on 14 July, planning 9,267 homes against a need of 21,740.
